St. Stephen's

St. Stephen’s is truly awe-inspiring, both in its architecture and in its story. The building, designed by Samuel Sanders Teulon, is considered one of London’s finest Victorian Gothic churches. Completed in 1869, the church closed for worship in 1976 due to subsidence expenses and dwindling congregations.

Residents, distraught by watching the derelict building decline and against proposed plans to demolish it for a car park, formed St. Stephen’s Restoration and Preservation Trust in 1999. This body has, so far, raised over £4.5 million from English Heritage, the Heritage Lottery Fund, local businesses, and individual donors, and with this has restored St. Stephen’s to its current magnificent state.

St. Stephen’s is now available for hire for private events and corporate functions. This huge space boasts a grassed entrance garden and a raised stage area in the apse. Due to the lovely colours, wooden floor, sympathetic lighting and powerful heating, this impressive venue manages to retain a warm and intimate atmosphere.
