Harnessing Social Media During Events

If you’re organising events that require marketing and promotion, you will be familiar with the opportunities found in social media. However, if you’re like many others, you may have overlooked the golden nugget of potential in harnessing the power of social media DURING your event.

Not only does it bring life to your social media pages, but there is also a real possibility of sparking FOMO (fear of missing out) which is as a result of seeing posts on social media! So, there is this huge potential to tap into and generate interest and future sales by showing off your event to those who couldn’t make it or are yet to be convinced enough to attend for themselves.

It can be useful to think about this aspect as far in advance as possible, as it may inform some of your early decisions. We suggest, always looking at planning with a social media hat on, asking yourself – how can we encourage more interaction both prior to and during our event. In addition, you will need to have some dedicated event crew to be hands-on during the event itself.

At Penniblack we know all too well how much time it takes to organise the perfect event, so here are some of the ways you can capitalise on the opportunities available to you with today’s social media platforms.

Mobile device home screen with social channels.

Go Live

Both Facebook and Instagram have the ability to post a live video. By utilising this feature, you can capture the atmosphere. It can be as simple as a quick pan around the room or if you want to you can speak to some of the guests and get them to share how much fun they are having at your event!

Real-Time Photos

Rather than waiting until after your event to post your photographs, post some during the event. In our experience, ‘behind the scenes’ photos are popular, the delicious food and before and after shots of a room transformation can receive great interaction. Together with plenty of action shots of the goings on of your event and your lovely guests.

Use Hashtags

In your pre-event materials, be sure to share your hashtags and social media links with your guests. Encourage them at every opportunity to share their own experience whilst tagging your event. You can then retweet and share these to create even more buzz.

Branded Backdrop

Providing a branded backdrop or other branded props at your event can encourage your guests to take some snaps in front on them which will boost your brand presence, as these will likely be shared on social media.

Video Testimonials

Capturing some of your guest’s excitement and positive words or videoing snapshots of keynote speakers or live entertainment can be a great way of giving insight into your event – anything that captures the essence and buzz.

You could do this via the live social options or simply create some videos and then post them to your social media platforms during the event.

Where possible plan what video footage you’d like to capture in advance so you can specifically seek out those opportunities.
