5 of the Best Meats to Use at Your Healthy Barbecue

With summer weather just around the corner, people are starting to bring their barbecues out of hibernation.

Don’t get us wrong, we love a burger and sausage as much as the next person, but below we reveal some of the best meats for the health-conscious amongst us to test out this barbecue season.

Pork Tenderloin

Pork chops are a British staple but not everybody can stomach the fat that graces one side of the meaty treat. A pork chop around 110 grams in weight contains 275 calories and 16 grams of fat.

Pork tenderloin is a lean strip of meat located on the backbone and can be cooked and sliced into chops. The same sized serving of tenderloin contains just 120 calories and 4 grams of fat. Giving your tenderloin a rubbing with garlic powder, cumin and thyme will be perfect before it hits the BBQ.

Swordfish

If you are trying to keep your bikini bod this summer or want to keep your barbecue super healthy, fish is a great way to go. However, which fish is best for the grill?

If you have a local fishmonger or top-notch supermarket, get your hands on some swordfish. These meaty steaks are not dissimilar to tuna but can withstand even the most brutal of barbecue pursuits.

Keep it simple, season with just salt, pepper, and lemon, then pop the swordfish steaks on the grill for around 5 to 7 minutes so that they remain moist.

Turkey Burgers

You simply cannot have a barbecue without a burger. However, red meat such as beef is something many do not like to include in their diet. This is also a chance for you to get creative in the kitchen.

Make sure to purchase lean or extra lean turkey mince and any veggies that would tickle your taste buds. Pop your mince in a bowl, add a drizzle of olive oil and some finely chopped onion, chilies, or red pepper. Pop them on the grill until cooked and serve in a fresh multi-seed bun.

Pheasant

Grilled chicken can be tiresome, so why not create some excitement with a forgotten type of fowl? Available at most butchers, pheasant is a lean game meat which is high in vitamin B and potassium. It is also made up of 78% protein, ideal for those hitting the gym.

The best way to cook a pheasant on a BBQ is to skin it and pop it on a spit, turning occasionally.

Flank Steak

Steak is, for many, their favourite meat to grill. With many concerned about red meat in their diet, why not go for a lean cut like flank steak so that you aren’t missing out? Not only is it a cheap cut, but it is also low in fat and rich in protein and iron.

Granted, flank is not the most tender of steaks. But, due to its leanness, a massage with soy sauce, chili sauce or Worcestershire sauce often does the trick.
